Get Ready for Green Hearts Everywhere! 💚

Since 2015, millions of people have used the power of green hearts every Valentine’s Day to ask politicians to tackle the climate crisis and protect what we love from its worst impacts. When you make and share a green heart, you are sending a clear message to people in power that you care about climate, nature and people.

The Climate Coalition are behind this amazing campaign and it is now more important than ever to show decision makers that tackling the climate crisis is the fight that unites. There are a multitude of ways you can get involved from making your own hearts, setting up a community heart making project or emailing your MP.

As a way to support this amazing campaign you can purchase your own Alchemy Tiles Green Love Heart which you can use every year. All profits will be donated to climate action causes 💚

Zero to Climate Hero 2

Zero to Climate Hero 5-week challenge! Week Two 😁

So it's week two of the Climate Hero Challenge and this week its...

DITCH THE CAR (WHEN YOU CAN)

I'm extremely blessed to live in a stunning part of the world which means walking to and from work is definitely a pleasure, regardless of the weather. Although I'm only a 5 minute drive from home to studio I try to walk to work as many times a week as I can. For two thirds of the year I'm travelling extensively across the UK to various shows and exhibitions so when I'm home, walking is always a breath of fresh air, literally. For me it ticks many boxes...

On a practical side...

1) Reduces my carbon footprint to compensate for travel during show season

2) Helps reduce my fuel costs

3) Minimises wear and tear on the car

4) Reduces car emissions in my area

On a physical side...

1) Keeps me fit (no such thing as a flat road in Cornwall 😁)

2) Gives me mental clarity to start or finish the day

3) Helps me develop deeper breathing and a state of calm

4) I have more chance of meeting and chatting to local neighbours

On a well being side...

1) I get to witness the changing of seasons

2) Spot local wildlife and have a greater knowledge of the plants where I live

3) Forage for my food

4) Bathe in the beauty and essence of the trees and water

5) Continuously be inspired for my creative work

Although I'm fortunate in my surroundings I will always try to find beauty wherever I walk and will often see Mother Nature growing in the most obscure of places, even through concrete. Being immersed in nature keeps my sense of wonder - and may that last till the end of my days ❤️🙏

Zero to Climate Hero 5-week challenge! Week One 😁

Although my business is built on the foundation of the Permaculture principles of Earth Care, Fair Share and People Care there is always more that can be done so I've signed up for the Zero to Climate Hero 5-week challenge! with the WWF.

Week One - REUSE & UPCYCLE

All of my packaging is either reuse-able, recycled or bio-degradable. Local businesses donate their packaging to me so that I can re-use it for shipping out tiles. The tiles are extremely fragile so I also use the amazing ethical packaging made by a local Cornish business called Flexi-Hex.

In addition to this any plastic bags that I receive either with deliveries or clay are re-purposed to wrap and layer my wet clay tiles to keep them wet or to stop the inlaid tiles drying out too much.

Recycling plastic bags

The bags that can't be re-purposed are cleaned down and taken to plastic bag recycling centres.

Single use plastic is avoided as much as possible and always recycled after use in my recycling bins at the studio.

As I get through a large amount of clay I always have extra plastic clay bags to be recycled. Sadly the clay company do not re-use them so if there is anyone out there who could use them in some way I'd love to hear from you 😁

Mel with her Best Hand Crafted Tile Company Award 2021

BEST HAND CRAFTED TILE COMPANY 2021

I am ecstatic to be able to tell you that Alchemy Tiles has been announced winner of the Southern Enterprise Awards for “Best Hand Crafted Tile Company” for the second year in a row.

It is such an honour to be awarded this accolade again after a tough couple of years for everyone working in the creative sector. The pandemic meant many creatives had to make some big changes to the way they work, and I have been no exception.

I have worked hard to ensure customers have still been able to buy tiles for their homes and projects and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of Alchemy Tiles fans and customers for their support that gives creative makers such as myself the energy and enthusiasm to keep on producing high-quality work.

I am so proud that my hard work, skills, and techniques have continued to be recognised and you have my promise that I will continue to develop those techniques to ensure your tiles are always authentic and sustainable.

The past couple of years really would not have been possible without the immense support you all have given me. I am excited for what the future holds for Alchemy Tiles.

See you all in 2022! Have a great Christmas and I look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Made in Cornwall Winner

Made in Cornwall Winner

It was with very unexpected but absolute delight that I was awarded winner of the Made in Cornwall Member of the Year 2021!!!

I've been a proud member of the Made In Cornwall Scheme since 2016 which involves a rigorous examination by Trading Standards to ensure my creations are authentically Cornish from start to finish. After achieving top marks across the board I was delighted to be part of this fabulous scheme of talented Cornish artisans producing authentic Cornish products.

A huge thank you goes out to the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce for all their amazing support throughout 2021 and I can't wait for a spectacular 2022 🤩

Honour Thy Mother - Mothers Day

Honour Thy Mother

After celebrating a truly powerful International Women's Day the energy naturally flows into Mothers Day and the theme of honouring continues. As Mother Earth begins to emerge from her winter slumber we begin to feel her energy rising in the sap and the feeling of Spring around us.

As the earths fertility begins to blossom we give thanks to the beautiful mothers in our lives who nurture and care for us and love us unconditionally in their own magical way.

For some of us this time can be difficult as we remember the wonderful mothers and grandmothers we have lost and how we crave to be held in their embrace just one more time. So let their love shine on in you and share what you loved about them most.

In the build up to Mothers Day I will once again be honouring amazing women in my life who are exceptional mothers and carers. If you feel moved to do the same then let that love shine through and #honourthymother ❤️

Conor Thy Soul Sister - International Women's Day

Honour Thy Soul Sister - International Women's Day

International Women's Day on Monday 8th March is a day close to my heart. An honouring of women across the globe regardless of race, colour or creed. It is a universal love and thanks for all that they do and so often unseen, unspoken, unrecognised or acknowledged.

Every year I create a certain tile but this year I wanted to do a little bit more. There are so many powerful and inspiring women across the world who do so much but for me it is those women in our every day lives who bring so much blessing to my life.

So for the next 5 days I will be honouring 5 soul sisters in my personal world with 5 of their beautiful and inspiring qualities. They are the ones who make my world brighter and if you feel drawn to do the same I encourage you to #honourthysoulsister.

Each post will be accompanied by a tile created to remind us of our beauty and magnificence, to stand tall in our power and support each other, rather than tearing each other down. By shining our light bright into the world, we remind others to do the same ❤️

Alchemy Tiles Southern Enterprise Award 2020

Southern Enterprise Award 2020

Alchemy Tiles: proud winner of the SME Southern Enterprise Awards for extensive expertise and skills, dedication to customer service and client satisfaction with an on-going commitment to excellence and innovation. It was with absolute delight and deep humility that I received the Best Hand Crafted Tile Company Award 2020.

All new businesses take time to get off the ground, especially when you're a soul trader, but this award really gave me huge confirmation that all the dedicated hours and hard work were paying off, especially during a time when the world was dealing with so much adversity with COVID.

To be recognised on a national level for something I am deeply passionate about, from the creation to the end customer, was indeed a feather in my cap. Keeping this ancient tradition and craft alive and taking it to new heights is what gets me out of bed in the mornings and creating beautiful pieces and bespoke interiors is what makes my heart sing.

So thank you, one and all, who have supported my work, my journey, my craft, my passion. Without you it would not be possible and I am only spurred on to create to even higher levels of wonder.

Welcome to Alchemy Tiles

Hand carved from the heart...

Welcome the new website for Alchemy Tiles! I'm really excited to be sharing my work with you and hope you find something inspiring among these pages. As my work has developed over the last 8 years it has reached a point where Alchemy Tiles needed its own space and the new website is designed not only to showcase my work but also to make it easier for online purchases as we move into a highly digital age.

As all bar two of my shows were cancelled this year and as more and more people are now buying online due to COVID, it made sense to upgrade and make the experience more user friendly. I am still getting used to the new platform so please bear with me and if you have any feedback I'd be genuinely grateful for it.

As much as the new website is a great show case, images of my work still don't do them justice and seeing them in the flesh is always so much better. Their vibrancy and tactile draw, is what brings them to life and if you ever want to visit my Studio in Mawnan Smith you are always welcome to make an appointment to see the alchemy first hand.

This year has indeed been a roller coaster of events and emotions and as each of us has tried to find our own meaning and way through it, I personally have used the time to develop my work even further. With new colours, designs, inspiring words and getting to grips with a digital age it has been no small task to keep this ancient technique alive.

So please enjoy these pages and thank you for supporting my work.
