Beyond Four Walls: Bringing Storytelling Into the Garden
There is something rather wonderful about taking something traditionally associated with the interior of a home and allowing it to step outside.
We spend so much time considering the rooms we live in, the colours, artwork, furniture and objects that make them feel like ours, yet our gardens, terraces, courtyards and exterior walls can offer just as much opportunity for creativity and storytelling.
For me, a wall has never simply been a wall.
It is a surface waiting for a story.
Art Made to Live With You
One of the things I love most about creating bespoke tiles is imagining where they will eventually live.
Sometimes that might be above an AGA, surrounding a fireplace or forming a feature within a bathroom. But encaustic tiles can also become beautiful pieces of artwork outdoors, transforming an otherwise overlooked wall into something completely individual.
A garden frieze can echo the landscape surrounding a home.
A marine scene can bring the movement of the sea into a coastal terrace.
A contemporary geometric design can become a striking focal point beside a pool or outdoor dining area.
And a completely bespoke piece can quietly tell the story of the people who live there.
The setting changes, but the philosophy behind the work remains exactly the same:
Every tile begins with a story.
Inspired by the Natural World

Perhaps unsurprisingly, some of my favourite outdoor commissions have been inspired by the sea.
Living and working in Cornwall, the ocean has a habit of finding its way into my work, shoals of fish, octopus tentacles, mermaids, seahorses and tiny fragments of underwater life appearing across the clay.
There is something particularly lovely about seeing those pieces installed outside.
The imagery suddenly begins a conversation with its surroundings. Sunlight moves across the crackle glaze throughout the day. Colours shift as the light changes. Plants grow around the piece. Weather softens the environment around it.
The artwork becomes part of the landscape rather than simply something placed within it.
From Organic to Contemporary

Outdoor spaces don't necessarily call for botanical or nature-inspired designs either.
One of the things I have been exploring more recently is how my hand-carved technique can translate into much more contemporary work.
Strong geometry, rich blues, turquoise and warm earthy tones can create something completely different while still retaining the unmistakable character of a handmade surface.
I particularly love the contrast between precise geometric forms and the tiny variations left by the maker's hand.
Because handmade doesn't have to mean traditional.
It can be bold.
Architectural.
Minimal.
Playful.
Or wonderfully unexpected.
And because every design is created individually, it can respond not only to the dimensions of a space, but to its architecture, colours and surroundings.
A Piece of the Story

Some exterior commissions have a very practical purpose too.
Tiles can become house signs, business signage or architectural features, pieces designed not only to decorate a building but to become part of its identity.
Others exist simply because a particular wall feels as though it deserves
something special.
And I rather like that.
We don't always need a practical reason to surround ourselves with things
that make us smile.
A beautiful object can mark a memory, reflect something we love or simply bring a moment of joy each time we walk past it.
That is enough.
Made Slowly. Made by Hand.

Every Alchemy Tile begins as clay.
It is rolled and cut by hand before the design is carved freehand into the surface. Coloured clays are then carefully inlaid into those carved lines before the piece is dried, scraped back, glazed and fired.
There are no printed transfers, moulds or repeated patterns.
The small differences are part of the work.
A carved line carries the movement of my hand. The glaze settles differently across every surface. The kiln leaves its own subtle signature.
In a world where so many things are designed to be identical, I think there is something increasingly special about living with an object that could only ever have been made once.
Your Outside Space Can Tell a Story Too
A courtyard wall.
A garden kitchen.
A terrace overlooking the sea.
The side of a swimming pool.
An entrance to a home or business.
Even the smallest forgotten corner can become somewhere to place a little beauty.
And a bespoke installation doesn't have to begin with a fully formed design. Very often it begins with a conversation, a place, a memory, a favourite creature, a colour, a few words or simply a feeling you'd like the finished piece to hold.
From there, the story begins to find its way into the clay.
Because our outdoor spaces are part of our homes too.
Perhaps they deserve a little art of their own.
Every tile begins with a story… what’s yours?
Thinking about a bespoke outdoor piece?
If you have a garden wall, courtyard, terrace or exterior space that you've always felt could become something more, I'd love to hear about it.
