When Stories Find Their Way Home

There are certain phrases that stay with you long after you've read them.

When I opened the latest edition of Cornwall Living and saw the title of the feature...

The Language of Clay

...I found myself smiling.

Because if I had to describe what I've been trying to do through Alchemy Tiles all these years, that might just be it.

Not simply making tiles.

Learning the language of clay.

For me, clay has never been just a material.

It has always felt like a quiet conversation.

Each commission begins in much the same way—not with sketches or measurements, but with listening.

Someone tells me about a place they love.

A family story.

A favourite poem.

A wedding.

A kitchen that will become the heart of their home.

Or perhaps someone they never want to forget.

Those conversations slowly become ideas.

Those ideas become lines.

And those lines eventually become clay.

The Cornwall Living feature beautifully describes this journey, explaining how every commission develops through stories, memories and personal connections before they are translated into clay by hand. It also explores how each tile is carved freehand, allowing every piece to retain its own individual character.

I don't think that's something I consciously set out to do.

It's simply how the work has always unfolded.

No two stories are ever the same.

So no two tiles should be either.

That's one of the reasons I continue to carve every line freehand.

The movement of the carving tool records something of that moment.

It captures instinct.

Gesture.

Time.

Perhaps even a little emotion.

It's impossible to recreate exactly.

And I rather like that.

In a world where so much is manufactured to be identical, I find great comfort in knowing that every finished piece still carries evidence of the human hand.

The Cornwall Living article also reflects something that has become increasingly important to me over the years—that these pieces aren't simply decorative surfaces.

They're designed to become part of people's everyday lives.

A splashback that quietly watches family meals unfold.

A fireplace that gathers generations together every Christmas.

A hallway where children race through the front door after school.

Or a single commemorative piece that keeps someone's memory close.

When we surround ourselves with meaningful objects, our homes become more than beautiful spaces.

They become places that hold our stories.

I'm incredibly grateful to the team at Cornwall Living for taking the time to share the story behind Alchemy Tiles and for recognising that craftsmanship is about so much more than the finished object.

It's about patience.

It's about listening.

And it's about creating something that still feels meaningful many years after it leaves the studio.
